RCDs, commonly known as safety switches, are an essential part of electrical safety. Newer AFDD+RCBO technology can provide an additional level of protection by also detecting dangerous electrical arc faults that can lead to electrical fires.

An RCD (Residual Current Device) provides protection against electric shock by detecting leakage current and rapidly disconnecting the affected circuit. A standard circuit breaker protects wiring against overloads and short circuits, but does not provide the same protection against electric shock as an RCD.

An RCBO combines RCD protection and circuit breaker protection in a single device, providing protection against earth leakage, overloads and short circuits.

For an additional level of protection, an Arc Fault Detection Device (AFDD) can detect dangerous electrical arcing that conventional circuit breakers, RCDs and RCBOs are not designed to detect. Arc faults can be caused by damaged cables, loose connections, worn insulation and other faults, and can potentially lead to electrical fires.
